Gerald Martin King, (Gerry to his friends and family) illustrator, philatelist and humarist of extraordinary creativity and passion passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024, at the age of 89.
Gerry lived a life marked by unwavering dedication, kindness, and a zest for life. His unique perspective and irreverent artistic flair brought joy and wonder to the world of stamps and beyond.
Gerry grew up in East London in the 1950's becoming a turf accountant professionally. As well as being a self taught illustrator and musician he was fascinated with philately throughout his life becoming an expert in the field and recipient of many awards and accolades including recognition from the Royal Philatelic Society and Philatelic Congress of Great Britain for his work.
Gerry was a particularly active and celebrated member of the Cinderella Stamp Club for his imaginative and whimsical designs, often inspired by the works of Lewis Carroll. His "Alice Through the Pillar Box" series, a collection of fantasy “Cinderella” stamps, and his subsequent book of the same name, captivated stamp collectors worldwide for their blend of surrealism and philatelic precision.
Beyond his artistic pursuits, Gerry was a kind and gentle soul, always willing to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with others. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of illustrators and collectors.
Gerry was predeceased by his beloved wife Marie and is survived by his children; Patrick, David, Eve and Aine.
A funeral service for close family and friends will be held at the Waveney Memorial Park and Crematorium in Beccles, Suffolk on the 6th of December 2024 at 3pm. For those who prefer, in lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Marie Curie or Cancer Research.
Gerry's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
