Mid Suffolk council will be under new leadership from later this month - but don't expect any major changes in the near future.

Group leader Andy Mellen knows the Green Party will have a clear majority when the new council meets for the first time on May 22.

He looks set to be the new council leader. He said he did not expect there to be any major immediate changes to two of its most controversial business gestures.

Work started on the huge Gateway 14 business park on the outskirts of Stowmarket a year ago - and it is set to become part of the new Freeport East trading zone with Felixstowe and Harwich.

The first units on the site are taking shape, and persmission for the project has been granted.

Mr Mellen said this had now passed the point of no return, but he hoped there might be changes to make it more sustainable.

He said: "We will be looking to see if we can ensure we aren't just putting more cars on to the road at the busiest times - improving access for people who want to reach it by other ways.

"But it's going ahead. The infrastructure is going in and we have to make sure it can bring the greatest benefit to the district - and help support our other projects."

Cifco, the commercial property owned jointly by Babergh and Mid Suffolk, will also continue in its current form in the immediate future.

Mr Mellen said: "Clearly with that we will have to talk to the new administration at Babergh because it is a joint company. We don't know who will be running that council but our Green party colleagues could have a major say in that.

"I don't think whatever happens there will be a quick change there. We will want to look at the investments and consider whether we might to move things around a bit and possibly invest more in local projects."
