Works on an "eyesore" roundabout in Stowmarket are set to begin next week.

The revamp of the Crown Street roundabout will include the removal of the uneven and dangerous paving and the installation of new footpaths and pedestrian islands.

The works will take place between September 4 and 13, with the roundabout approach being closed each day from 8am until 4pm to ensure the safety of the workers and drivers.

The road will be reopened and temporary traffic signals will be in place between September 14 and 22 to complete the work.

On-street parking may be restricted at times.

For the duration of the road closure, traffic will be diverted via Crown Street, Cardinalls Road, Spring Row, B1113, Stowupland Road, Station Road East, A1308, and vice versa.

Councillor Keith Welham campaigned for the roundabout to be renovated after tree roots had made the paving slabs around the roundabout uneven and dangerous for pedestrians.

Mr Welham said: "This had become an appalling eyesore. It seems to have taken a long time, but we finally have a scheme ready to go.

"It is more expensive than expected, and I’ve pledged the majority of my four years’ worth of local highways budget to it. Without that, it’s probable nothing would have been done.

"This will improve the area visually as well as providing new surfacing, which is safe for pedestrians to use."

Stowmarket town clerk, David Blackburn, added: "The town council has been campaigning for improvements to be made around Crown Street for some time.

"It is such a high-profile junction in the town, and major repairs are required to improve the street scene.

"We are very grateful to Suffolk County Council for funding a scheme that should provide a major uplift to the immediate area.

"I am certain that some minor short-term inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians will be accepted as long as the works don’t take too long to complete."
