An estimated 100,000 people in Suffolk are being urged to check if they are eligible for payments of up to £175.

Low income families and people struggling to make ends meet may be able to apply for the Surviving Winter grant, Suffolk Community Foundation has said.

The funding is directed towards around 100,000 households currently living in povery.

People will be able to apply for grants of up to £175 or a delivery of 500 litres of oil.

Melanie Craig, chief executive at Suffolk Community Foundation, said: “Our Surviving Winter Appeal is now in its 13th year and has raised a fantastic £1.5 million so far.

"This has provided a lifeline for many thousands of people by helping them to stay safe and warm in their own homes.

“But the need for support is now greater than ever, as one in every seven people in Suffolk is currently living in fuel poverty and having to make difficult choices every day.

"We would urge anyone who meets the criteria to apply – especially now the temperature has once again dropped."

Anyone who thinks they may be eligible should apply online where possible by visiting www.citizensadviceipswich.org.uk/surviving-winter. Alternatively, please call Citizens Advice Ipswich on 01473 298634.

The grants are available to people whose home address is in Suffolk and:

  • are aged 65 or under

  • have a combined household income of less than £35,000 and savings of less than £1,500

  • are not receiving any means-tested benefits
