Suffolk Owl Sanctuary has achieved national recognition for the quality of the outdoor education it provides.
The Stonham Aspal site has received the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge, endorsed by the Department for Education, which recognises the quality of learning on offer and the effectiveness of risk management.
The sanctuary, based in Stonham Barns Park, is home to more than 80 birds of prey from around the world, including a barn owl and snowy owl, as well as meerkats.
Susan Jones, Education Officer at Suffolk Owl Sanctuary, said: “Being awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge is a fantastic achievement for all the staff here as it shows that we offer schools, youth groups and home educating families high quality learning experiences.
“We're thrilled to get official recognition for our efforts, and we look forward to welcoming even more children and young people to the Sanctuary.”
Established in 2001, the park hosts daily talks and displays for visitors as well as school visits.
Its on-site animal hospital also helps rehabilitate wild sick and injured birds of prey.
Dr Anne Hunt, chief executive of the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, said: “Educational visits are among the most memorable experiences in a child’s school life.
“The Quality Badge offers teachers the reassurance that the venue is providing high quality educational experiences and have the appropriate risk management structures in place, meaning less paperwork for schools and peace of mind for teachers. I congratulate Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on being awarded the Quality Badge.”
Across Suffolk, nine locations have achieved the Quality Badge.
