Gritters will be out on Suffolk roads as temperatures are set to plummet across the county.

Road surface temperatures are set to drop below -3C overnight with low temperatures forecast this week. 

It comes as a yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place until Wednesday morning. 

The team of 36 Suffolk gritters will be deployed on countywide priority one routes from 6pm on Tuesday until 4am on Wednesday with countywide priority two routes being covered from 12.30am on Wednesday.

Priority one treatments are considered when road surface temperatures are forecast to drop below 1°C, whilst priority two routes are carried out when the forecast predicts there to be a longer period of cold weather conditions.

Roads which will be gritted included routes to hospitals, fire stations, rail station and main bus routes as well as roads leading to rural villages and schools. 

The new fleet is equipped with advanced digital systems and the latest route planning software to support winter maintenance drivers and enable them to grit their routes efficiently and effectively.

Drivers are also reminded to continue to drive safely across the county even if the road has been gritted.
