The Eastgate Boxing Club in Bury St Edmunds held their third annual show to raise money for charity recently.
Diners and spectators were entertained by a programme beginning with host club boxer Terrance Price in a skill bout against Ipswich’s Oliver Wright.
With both boxers giving their all, the bout gave both a good opportunity to show their early skills in a non-decision bout.
The first contested bout was between Bailey Petrie, 11, of Eastgate and Luke Smee of Halstead.
In a hard-fought contest the local boxer showed good movement of the feet, turning his opponent in the corners and counter punching to good effect.
Petrie managed to secure the bout in a good last round of what was a hard fought contest. Both boxers showed good skills beyond their years.
Eastgate’s Cameron Elvin, 14, then showed lots of determination in a contest with Mitch Lawson from Halstead, with Lawson getting the better of the head shots and Elvin working to the body well.
The judges awarded the decision to the visiting boxer and a rematch has already been arranged.
At the interval a grand auction took place, as an Anthony Joshua-signed boxing glove raised £520.
Then two items at end of the auction, a Manchester United Champions’ League signed football, donated by Glen Edwards of First Stop Travel, and a portrait of Bobby Robson, donated by Ipswich legend Kevin Beattie, raised £600 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The last local boxer to appear on the show, Offie Price, appeared to have won the first round clearly with the cleaner punches but became drawn into a brawl with Norwich City boxer David Pagado in the second round, which suited the visiting boxer. Whilst the bout was a crowd-pleaser, the last round was edged by Pagado, who secured the judges’ decision.
The recently-formed Thetford club also provided a contingent of six boxers who all showed good skills, training under head coach Matt Dean.
The Eastgate Club expressed their gratitude for their support.
